When the mirror ceases to be a tool of recognition and becomes a space of inquiry, identity opens itself even before recognizing itself.
Never Knows addresses the construction of identity from early childhood. Emerging from the Behind the Obvious series, this work by Abraham Aronovitch explores a gaze in formation—still devoid of certainties and confronted with a situation in which perception remains unstable. The gesture is simple, almost fragile, marking the beginning of a process of self-awareness without immediate resolution.
Within this dispositif, the mirror no longer serves to validate a fixed image, but becomes a site of open questioning. The painting thus suggests a state of total availability, where identity is neither defined nor yet fully conscious of itself. Through this nascent face-to-face, the work captures the suspended instant in which the subject begins to perceive the gap between physical presence and reflection, opening the path toward an endless search for the self.
